create a positive image of yourself, your organisation or brand. PR is about educating people, removing untruths and mistrust, and enhancing image. It is also about generating an opinion amongst the 'target audience'. Any PR initiative, therefore, encompasses into its fold a whole gamut of people from policy-maker to common man and tries to ensure that it is a win-win situation for everyone.
Why Infrastructure?
At a time when India has taken giant strides in nation building, something that has not adequately happened in the first five decades post-Independence, the subject of infrastructure is now relevant to everyone in the country. Precisely why the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), a 49-year old body that has National and Regional Chapters comprising PR practitioners, has taken up this subject as the core theme for this year's All India PR Conference.
The gains of infrastructure development will be seriously affected if there is failure or delay in its continued progress; failure or delay could affect the lives of the common man and, indeed, GDP growth. PRSI members believe that there is need to take the subject of infrastructure development beyond industrial boundaries, to impress its importance to as many as possible. However, such an exercise is best carried out in a non-technical manner. And that can be achieved by using PR as a tool and as a platform to deliberate upon the subject.
One of the objectives is also to make every participant feel that he is part of a solution.
To make the citizen of India play an effective role in building a better India. At almost every forum today, people realise that true development and progress can come only from 'inclusive growth' and 'sustainability'.
It is to dwell at length on these various aspects that the PRSI has chosen the
infrastructure theme at the 3-day conference in Chennai, which is backed by the National Chapter and Regional Chapters of PRSI.
Be a part of this initiative as a participant. Please come and extend your support to the PRSI, Chennai Chapter, the host for the Conference.

| Welcome to CHENNAI |
 |
Madras that is Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is the Gateway to South India. The fourth largest metropolis in India and the country's automobile capital is located on the Coromandel Coast. Although the 368-year-old city grew around the English settlement of Fort St George in the mid- |
17th Century and its inhabitants felt the British influence in many ways, it has always retained its Tamil heritage. The city, with a population exceeding seven million, has the second longest beach in the world, the Marina. South Indian classical music and dance are nurtured here and theatre is alive. The traditional blends with the modern here. You can see a middle-aged woman draped in a nine-yard sari or a teenager donning the latest fashion; old temples co-exist with modern high-rises. |
 |
The history of Tamils spans more than 2,000 years. The city’s heritage lies not in just its towering temples and monuments, but also in its education, culture and music. The city is a melting pot of religion, culture, astrology, education, IT, food, fashion, arts and crafts, shopping malls, traditional |
dances, classical music, beaches, entertainment, libraries, bookshops and sport.
Chennai is fast becoming the IT capital of the South. The city has excellent infrastructure and communication facilities. |
 |
If you like to explore the city, there are several interesting places to visit - Fort St George, St Mary's Church in the Fort, Santhome Basilica, Valluvar Kottam, St Thomas Mount, Thousand Lights Mosque, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Vivekanandar Illam or Ice House, the Guindy Park, to name |
a few. As for shopping, Chennai is the hub of textiles and silk sarees. For connoisseurs of food, green freshly cut banana leaves are used for serving traditional festive South Indian meals. The famous Filter Coffee is made preserving the original aroma and flavour of rich, pure, ground coffee. |
 |
If you wish to plan a getaway from Chennai, there's Mamallapuram, the ancient seaport of the Pallavas, 58 km from Chennai, a world heritage site. It houses the world's largest open-air bas-relief carved on a marvellous rock formation. Then there is Pondicherry, an old French |
settlement, three-hour drive away from Chennai. For more information on these and other places of tourist interest you would do well to refer to the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation tourism guide or log on to www.tamilnadutourism.org |
